Brian Shields comes from a long line of artists. Brian’s mother was a self-taught artist that inspired him as a child, teaching him to draw and paint. Over the years, Brian studied Visual Communications at the Art Institute in Pittsburgh PA. He also took various workshops on oil painting. To help pay bills, Brian took a course in Advanced Welding Technologies. Moving to Georgia in 1987, Brian was employed as a welder. Still, he continued drawing and painting as a hobby. He then moved from Georgia to Kansas in 1993. There he earned a degree in CAD drafting and Mechanical Design, moving back to Georgia in 1997. He now resides in Barrow County and has been employed as a mechanical designer for twenty years. In 2011, Brian decided to pick back up the paint brush and enrolled in “Painting with Charles” at the Lyndon House Art Center in Athens GA.
Currently Brian works in oils and acrylics on canvas, pen and inks and traditional wood carving and scrap metal sculpture. His biggest influences have been his mother, the Impressionist movement, Van Gogh, Monet. Jack Rudy, Alex Grey etc. Brian says his more “bizarre” works are inspired by his son and daughter.
