Biographical Info:

My creative purpose is driven by the desire to portray the beauty, unity and sublimity of Blackness and imagining the cosmic nature of my ancestors. Through the lens of Afrofantasy and Afrofuturism, I compare melanin to the darkness and vastness of the night sky–a realization from my many nights of stargazing through the years. The models in my work often appear in a range of blues and purples as a reference to a once derogatory and colorist title for very dark-skinned people, "blue-black" or "blurple". Much inspiration also came from the title of the semi-autobiographical play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, written by Tarell Alvin McCraney. The color choice also gives an extraterrestrial origin to the figures to represent the common sentiments of finding home in a land we were stolen to and for much of our history, treated as something other than human. The gold hands of my subjects represent the golden touch that Black people have for creativity and ingenuity.
